Shadow IT

Today I have been reading an article about Shadow IT that I have found very interesting, as a CIO in a company you could like that people buy their own equipment so you do not have to bear when they begin to complain that what you have bought is not what they need or what they want. But, at the same time, I think it is a a dangerous practice. Why?

First of all, because people always think they know about everything so, what they buy it is not probably the best option, the interaction with the company SW and HW could not be right, their suppliers could not be the best, and it is probably that another tool could do what they are looking for but they do not know it, as an IT professional you have an overall vision of your company so you are the most suitable person to fulfill those necessities, you are going to choose something that follows the company policies, and you know the repercussions of your choices.

Taking this into account and with they BYOD trend, it is likely if CIOs do not verify assets often that they lose the control of their department.
